Disco Ultimo

First off, Happy New Year! first entry of the year and it's about...
Two words: ultimate frisbee. So I’m not too much of an ultimate frisbee person, but I do like to play catch with a frisbee. Actually I’ve never played ultimate Frisbee, but I figure that this is the year to start since I’m now the proud owner of an ultimate Frisbee package. My friend from high school, jon w., gave it to me. This package not only came with a very nice Frisbee, but a DVD on how the game should be properly played and a pamphlet that came with 10 simple rules. It’s quite interesting. I haven’t watched the DVD yet, but I intend to. I’m sure it’s informative. This might be a good way for me to start exercising this year.
Here are some of the rules for ultimate Frisbee, in case you didn’t know:
- The Field: A rectangular shape with end zones at each end. A regulation field is 70 yards by 40 yards, with end zones 25 yards deep.
- Movement of the disc: The disc may be advanced in any direction by completing a pass to a teammate. Players may not run with the disc. The person with the disc (“thrower”) has ten seconds to throw the disc. The defender guarding the thrower (“marker”) counts out the stall count.
- Non-contact: No physical contact is allowed between players. Picks and screens are also prohibited. A foul occurs when contact is made.
- “Spirit of the Game”: Ultimate Frisbee stresses sportsmanship and fair play. Competitive is encouraged, but never at the expense of respect between players, adherence to the rules, and the basic joy of play.
Here’s some Frisbee lingo:
- Pancake catch, marking, pivoting, cutting, and the stack.
For more information on this lingo or ultimate Frisbee, you can contact me and we’ll watch the DVD together.
